Manual versus machine reprocessing
Any handling of laboratory glassware harbours a potential danger for laboratory personnel. Broken glass during manual cleaning can lead to dangerous injuries. Infectious and toxic contaminants pose a serious health risk. The cleaning agents used are often very caustic.

Only the machine reprocessing of laboratory glassware and utensils can be standardized, validated and automatically documented. Since the washers remain locked throughout the whole process and the whole process runs automatically, any potential danger for the laboratory personnel is reduced to a minimum. In this way, maximum protection is achieved for personnel during machine reprocessing.
Water quality
Water quality plays an important role in the analytically pure reprocessing of laboratory glass. Raw water contains salts and minerals which can result in deposits on the load and on machine surfaces. Fully demineralized water also prevents corrosion. It makes sense to ensure the right water quality, especially with high water consumption levels. Systematic water treatment increases the efficiency of the laboratory glassware washer. Filtration protects against harmful deposits, avoids down time as well as repairs and lowers the costs of detergents.
Application & laboratory glassware and utensils
The application can generally be categorized by the field (e.g. organic, inorganic chemistry, biology, etc.) and by the purpose or the work method (e.g. preparatory work, analyses, etc.). Frequently, the machine features, the flow of the cleaning process and the choice of cleaning agents are decided based on the application.
The laboratory equipment should be recorded based on the type (e.g. beakers, round-bottom or graduated flasks, measuring cylinders, etc.), size or volume (e.g. 1 ml, 500 ml, etc.) and quantity of the laboratory machines. Based on this list, a detailed assessment regarding the required features of the washers can be made.
Contamination and disinfection
Knowledge about the physical and chemical characteristics of contamination in laboratory equipment is of particular significance for the cleaning processes and the choice of detergent.
The physical and chemical characteristics of the contamination include, for example, the water solubility under acid, pH-neutral or alkaline conditions, the chemical conversion through hydrolysis or oxidation, the melting or softening point, the possibility of emulsion, suspension or dispersion.

For certain applications, disinfection of the laboratory equipment is required. On the one hand, disinfection protects laboratory personnel who work with infectious contaminants. On the other hand, disinfection prevents the transfer of germs from samples and preparations in medical laboratories, hygiene institutes, pharmaceutical laboratories, the food and cosmetic industry.
Methods of analysis and analytical purity
Analytical methods can be influenced by certain contaminations in the laboratory glassware. Knowing these factors is helpful for the choice of cleaning agent.

Depending on the detection limit, the specification of the susceptibility of the measurement methods, etc., each laboratory has its own definition of the term “analytically pure”. The cleaning result, the features of the washer and the cleaning program must satisfy this definition.
Miele service: Qualification of cleaning systems
In the pharmaceutical, food-processing and cosmetics industries, cleaning systems can be qualified. Miele offers the special service package “Installation Qualification and Operation Qualification” (IQ/OQ).
Before the IQ/OQ can be performed by Miele Service, the required documents must be created, inspected and released for use by the operator. The Miele technician then completes the qualification based on these documents. All the necessary calibrated and certified test apparatus is provided by Miele.
Installation Qualification (IQ)
The aim of the “Installation Qualification” is to determine whether the cleaning system and its installation meets the requirements of the operator and the appliance manufacturer. During the IQ inspection, Miele service engineers document, measure and assess compliance of delivered units with the original order, unit configuration and condition, installation and connection of the cleaning system and the calibration of certain measuring systems.
Operation Qualification (OQ)
During the “Operation Qualification” the inspection verifies whether the connected and installed cleaning system operates in accordance with the specifications of the operator and the manufacturer.
The documentation, inspection and evaluation of the OQ includes safety-relevant and operation-relevant functions, process-relevant notifications as well as the program sequence.

Training of operating personnel is also completed and documented during the “Operation Qualification”. This rounds off a comprehensive package comprising IQ/OQ paperwork, the services of highly skilled and qualified service engineers and the use of calibrated, certified test apparatus.
